meet Christel

Christel Van Hemelrijck is a Belgian abstract expressionist painter whose work explores the dialogue between memory, emotion and transformation.

Working primarily with oil on linen, she builds her paintings through layers of colour, transparency and texture. Layers are added, removed and revealed again, allowing traces of earlier gestures to remain visible. The surface becomes a space where movement, energy and transformation unfold, creating works that are constantly evolving rather than fixed.

Her practice balances spontaneity and control. Bold gestures coexist with more delicate passages, reflecting an ongoing exploration of what is revealed and what remains hidden. Colour plays a central role, carrying atmosphere, energy and personal experience without relying on literal representation.

Inspired by nature, movement and the Mediterranean landscapes that have been part of her life for decades, her work invites contemplation and personal interpretation.
